The Book Shelf

About The Book Shelf

The Book Shelf is a small independent book store located in Tryon, NC. We are committed to providing you with friendly and helpful service. We have been a fixture in downtown Tryon, North Carolina, since 1952. We offer national and regional bestsellers, an up-to-date children's section, unique cards and gifts, local authors, book clubs, and more. We happen to also have the best view from any bookstore in the Carolinas!

July 2010 New Owners and a Continued Commitment to Tryon's Readers!

The Friends of The Book Shelf welcomed new owners Penny Padgett and Bobby Silvers along with new store manager Stacey Stafford during a recent reception that also celebrated previous owner Betsy Goree and her new adventures. The Friends of the Book Shelf celebrated Betsy's starting a new chapter in her life and Penny, Bobby and Stacey's new adventures in providing Tryon's readers with the best in local, regional and national books.

Why shop Indie?

When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:

The Economy
  • Spend $100 at a local and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
  • Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
  • More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.
The Environment
  • Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.
The Community
  • Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.
  • Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
  • More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.

Now is the time to stand up and join your fellow individuals in the IndieBound mission supporting local businesses and celebrating independents.
