Michael Buffalo Smith
Former Polk County resident Michael Buffalo
Smith was formerly Editor of the Polk County News Journal and The Inman Times, and a
frequent contributor to both the Tryon Daily Bulletin and the Landrum News Leader. He was
also News Director for WTYN Radio and an on-air personality at WHKP in Hendersonville. Smith
is currently on a tour to promote his latest book from Mercer University Press, The Road Goes
on Forever: 50 Years of Allman Brothers Band Music, the “encyclopedia” of Allman Brothers

“It’s easy to be an Allman Brothers fan, it’s hard to explain exactly why they changed the
lives of so many of us Southern boys who dreamed of capturing lightning in a bottle,” said
Thornton. “Michael Buffalo Smith helps by putting this book together. Here we get to hear from
the people who were there, and hear from the horses mouths why it changed them. Great
insight and cool stories.”

This is Smith’s fifth book for Mercer, and his seventh overall. His next book for Mercer
will be released in the Spring of 2020, the biography of famed Capricorn records Producer, Paul Hornsby. Smith, who has come to be known as the “Ambassador of Southern Rock” among the stars of the genre, is also a songwriter, recording artist and performer, with a new CD out called Makin’ it Back to Macon, produced by Hornsby and featuring several of the 1970’s era stars who recorded at Capricorn Studios.
Superstar Charlie Daniels had this to say about Smith. "If anybody has been the scribe
for the history and growth of the music known as southern rock, it's been Michael Buffalo
Smith. His devoted and in depth writing has for decades kept the public abreast with the music,
the players, the triumphs and the tragedies.”
Penny at The Book Shelf will have copies of Smith’s book on sale, just in time for

“I can hardly wait to visit my old stomping grounds in Tryon again,” says Smith. “I sure
hope to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones.”
